  • OUR PROCESS | HEDSTROMS HOMEGROWNS

Our Process 1/1 FROM PLANTING TO SOWING IN ONE WEEK (ISH) The gratification from harvesting microgreens may not be "instant," but it's pretty darn close! We feel excited at each stage of the process! SEEDS All of our seeds, which come from TrueLeaf Market, are non-GMO, and some of them are also Heirloom varieties (arugula, basil, broccoli, and radish) or organic (spicy mustard seeds). TRAYS W e plant and grow in 5”x5” food-grade polypropylene plastic trays (BPA-free & recyclable) and then deliver our microgreens as living plants. DAY 0 We plant the seeds on top of the soil, give them lots of love and water, then cover the trays for three or four days with a blackout dome (fancy way to say we turn another growing tray upside down on top) to allow the magic to happen (aka germination). DAY 1 We check the seeds morning and night, waiting for the seed coats to split and tiny sprouts to emerge, which means we're doing our job right. DAY 2 or 3 When we see the first root hairs, we get a little thrill! Every. Single. Time. See for yourself how cool they are (picture two above). DAY 4 or 5 Once the stems and leaves are one to two inches high, we remove the blackout domes and place the trays under a grow light on our dining room table for 14+ hours a day. You can't imagine the comments from our neighbors when we first started growing microgreens and the light was on seemingly day and night - or maybe you can (haha)! We heard similar comments about the "homegrowns" part of our name. And to answer an oft-asked question: No, you can't smoke our greens - or at least you probably shouldn't! DAYS 6 & 7 The day the microgreens go under the lights may be the most magical day of all. Much like a sunrise or sunset, the process of photosynthesis just never gets old! The leaves start turning green immediately (noticeably different within an hour), and within half a day, they go from bright yellow to bright green! DAY 8 After a couple days under the light, and another inch or two of growth, they are ready for delivery and/or harvest.

Although we don't wear masks anymore when planting and delivering, we will continue to do so for new customers until you tel l us otherwise. ********************************************************************************************************************************************* Update: As of May 6, 2021, we are fully vaccinated thanks to Walgreens and Pfizer! We will continue to sterilize our trays before planting and wipe them down before delivering. We will also continue to wear masks when handling trays for new customers until you tell us otherwise (i.e., that you are comfortable with us not wearing masks when pl anting and delivering to you). ******************************************************************************************************************************************* 2020: With the risk of COVID-19 continuing to grow, we want to let you know the steps we are taking to address this pandemic in relation to your microgreens. We have always sterilized our trays before we use them , and we will continue to do so, but moving forward, we will make a few changes to our planting and watering regimen by wearing masks and diligently washing our hands before planting, watering, or handling any tray of microgreens. We hope that the care we take in growing and tending to your microgreens gives you peace of mind, as it does us. Although we have no reason to believe that we have been exposed to the coronavirus, with the new White House/CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19, Randy and I will also take extra precautions when delivering your microgreens by wearing a mask when holding the trays and wiping them down with Clorox wipes before leaving them on your porch. We will miss saying hello in person, but if you should hear us making your delivery, you could always say hello through your storm door! Now, more than ever, taking care of ourselves and our health MATTERS. Adding microgreens to our diet helps to boost our immunity with an influx of highly concentrated nutrients that just happen to taste really good! Thank you for your support and p lease stay safe! xo

Our grow room We love our new set up - no more trays on the dining room table! hhfinal_edited hhfinal_edited Our grow room We love our new set up - no more trays on the dining room table! 1/20 FRESH FROM OUR INDOOR GARDEN We'd love to grow microgreens especially for you & deliver them from our door to yours! LEARN MORE Welcome! If you've ever tasted microgreens - or never tasted them - we are happy you are here. Thank you for stopping by. We love microgreens with a passion and hope to inspire you to love them too (if you don't already)! Most people know microgreens as a garnish restaurants use to embellish food, and while we agree t hey are very cute , they are so much more. Good Things Come in Small Packages Simply put, microgreens are baby plants, harvested at the stage between sprouts and baby greens. Despite their tiny size, or more accurately because of it, they contain 4 to 40 times more phytonutrients, vitamins, sulforaphane, minerals, and healthy goodness than mature plants. Food as Medicine If you believe, as we do, that you are what you eat and that food can either heal chronic illness and disease or cause it, adding microgreens to your diet is an easy way to help your immune system function at its best (i.e., help you to help yourself). Magically Delicious All of the flavor of an entire plant is condensed into each microgreen stem and set of leaves, which makes them taste like the most radishy radish or mustardy mustard or basily basil you've ever eaten. (You get the idea!) The flavors are most intense when the plants are young, and they mellow a bit as they age (i.e., older and taller). Quick and Easy Microgreens are eaten raw, which makes them easy to add to every meal, except perhaps dessert (although the milder varieties like broccoli and kohlrabi blend in really well in fruit smoothies, so that sort of counts). We have other ideas on how to use microgreens on our FAQs page. Our Microgreens Our microgreens go the extra mile! All of the seeds are non-GMO, and some are organic and/or heirloom varieties. They are locally-grown in Hanover County, Virginia inside our home. We started on our dining room table, and in 2022, we converted a spare bedroom into our farm/grow room. Our microgreens are free from pesticides, and because the seeds are planted on top of the soil, they do not need to be washed before eating. As an added bonus, they come to you! We'd love to be your go-to resource in RVA for delivery of fresh, living microgreens. On the Horizon At the moment, we have a few pages hidden from sight that aren't quite ready to share, so please come back every now and then to check out our progress! Learn More For more information, check out our FAQs page or contact us directly. 1/1

  • ABOUT US | HEDSTROMS HOMEGROWNS

Our Inspiration After one taste of microgreens at the Carytown Farmers Market in 2018, we were so impressed by their flavor & healthiness, we binge-watched YouTube to learn how to grow our own! In October 2019 – after a ton of practice, trial, & error – we created Hedstrom's Homegrowns LLC. We are excited to officially debut these powerhouse seedlings known as microgreens. For more information, check out our FAQs page or contact us directly. Farming is in my blood, but it took me over 50 years to fully embrace it! My paternal grandfather and great- grandfather grew corn, tomatos, and a slew of other crops in large fields. My father has gardened his entire life and has a green thumb to prove it. I've always grown herbs and enjoyed cooking with fresh ingredients, but in 2017, after adopting a plant-based diet (via Dr. Fuhrman's Nutritarian eating plan ), my consumption of, and love for, veggies exploded. Fortunately, Randy loves growing and eating fruits and vegetables as much as I do.

  • FAQS | HEDSTROMS HOMEGROWNS

Frequently Asked Questions 1. WHAT ARE MICROGREENS? Microgreens are the seedlings of vegetables and herbs, harvested at the cotyledon stage, just before the first true leaves fully emerge. They are bigger than sprouts and smaller than baby greens. Basically, they are baby plants. 2. WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MICROGREENS? They are flavorful, versatile, and super healthy! According to a 2012 study f rom the University of Maryland , microgreens contain anywhere from 4 to 40 times the nutrients of mature plants. High in antioxidants and phytonutrients (including sulforaphane) , they promote health, help reduce the risk of disease, regulate digestion and blood sugar, and lower cholesterol. That's a whole lotta special in such a tiny plant. 3. I BOUGHT A TRAY OF MICROGREENS FROM YOU. NOW WHAT? First, thank you! We hope you love them as much as we do. Either way, we promise they love you (see University of Maryland study to find out just how much)! What do you do with your microgreens? You have three options: Option One: Treat your tray of greens as a living plant. Place it in a sunny spot and water it (see #4 below). Cut greens whenever you want them. They will continue to grow until cut. Option Two: Cut your greens all at once and place them in a covered glass container in your fridge. Plastic bags also work. Add a paper towel or napkin to the container to help absorb any moisture (see #5 & #6 below). Option Three: If you started with Option One, but you feel like your greens are wilting or growing too tall, switch to Option Two and refrigerate the rest of your greens. 4. HOW DO I KEEP MY MICROGREENS ALIVE? It's best to water your microgreens from the bottom. Place a small amount of water on a plate or dish and then set your tray of microgreens on top. There are drainage holes in the bottom of the trays, so the roots will absorb the water and reward you by staying alive. Water daily. You can keep your microgreens wherever you have natural light. 5. WHEN DO I CUT MY MICROGREENS? Cut them anytime you want! They are ready! If you don't cut them, they wll continue to grow taller and fuller (until cut). As they become bigger, they will still taste amazing, the flavor just won't be as intense. 6. HOW DO I CUT MY MICROGREENS? Run your hand over the top of the greens to shake off seed coats, then gently grasp a section of greens and cut ½” above the dirt with scissors or slice through the stems with a sharp knife (our preference), using the edge of the tray as your guide. You may already know this, but in case you don't, you can eat the stems as well as the leaves. 7. WILL MY MICROGREENS GROW BACK? No. They won't. We're sorry! Once cut, they don't re-grow. You may see new growth from seeds that didn't germinate at the same rate. (We've found that basil microgreens can be harvested a second time.) The tray is yours, so if you want to let the late bloomers bloom, definitely go for it! You will likely be able to cut a few more stems. 8. WHAT DO I DO WITH MY TRAYS ONCE MY MICROGREENS ARE GONE? Please reuse, recycle, or return your trays. If returning, we are happy to pick them up with your next order. No need to dump the soil unless you want to. We can add it to our compost - or you can add it to yours if you have one. 9. WHY DO YOU USE PLASTIC TRAYS? We know. It stinks. We tried realllly hard to find an earth-friendly growing container, and we have experimented with several biodegradable and/or compostable containers without success - the bottoms became moldy and/or there weren't drainage holes in the bottom. WE ARE STILL LOOKING! We've done the best we can with what's currently available, opting to pay a little more for our trays so we can at least feel good that they're BPA-free, recyclable, and made from food-grade polypropylene. 10. DO I NEED TO WASH MY MICROGREENS BEFORE I EAT THEM? Nope! We plant them on top of the soil, use no pesticides of any kind, and grow indoors, so there are no pests anyway. (There's a joke in there somewhere!) You may have to trim a few roots to get rid of dirt if a few stems pulled out of the soil when you cut. It happens to the best of us (sometimes the leaves tangle up with each other). The dirt doesn't taste good - trust us on that! 11. HOW LONG WILL MY MICROGREENS LAST? Once cut, greens stay fresh in the fridge several days, some keep more than a week. If you plan to cut and refrigerate your microgreens, it's better not to water them the day you cut them so the leaves and stems stay dry. Regarding living plants, they don't make it much past a few days in our house since we eat them at every meal, but some customers are still cutting theirs two weeks after they get them. 12. HOW DO I EAT OR USE MICROGREENS? Microgreens are best eaten raw or only lightly heated. That said, there are many ways to eat microgreens! Let us count the ways: As a lettuce replacement in salads, sandwiches, & wraps Inside an omelet/on top of eggs As a topping after cooking (pizza, soup) In green and/or fruit smoothies In homemade pesto (instead of, or along with, basil) Mixed into a loaded potato On avocado toast (my favorite!) In a stir-fry, after cooking As a crostini/bruschetta topping As a garnish on pasta, quinoa, and meat Mixed together for interesting flavors (e.g., radish with spicy mustard instead of horseradish on a beef sandwich) Anything else you can think of! 1 3. HOW DO YOU STERILIZE YOUR TRAYS? We use use 10ml of ZeroTol 2.0 (food grade hydrogen peroxide) per liter of water, which we spray on our trays prior to planting. Shop Micros
